RED-Reading Education

RED 3012  Basic Foundations of Reading  (3 Credits )  
This course prepares teacher candidates for implementation of procedures, and current practices for teaching reading. Specific techniques and materials for word identification, content reading and comprehension are developed. Florida ESOL Performance Standards and Reading Endorsement Competencies have been infused within the objectives for this course. Course objectives and assignments are designed to prepare students for the Florida ESOL Endorsement and Florida Reading Endorsement. This course specifically addresses all of Competencies 1 and 2 for Florida Reading Endorsement. Prerequisite: Admission to the Elementary Education BS.

  

  
RED 4519  Diagnostic and Corrective Reading Strategies  (3 Credits )  
This course has teacher candidates develop their knowledge of reading acquisition and factors that affect reading acquisition across different age groups and among all student populations. Students will diagnose and assess students in at least one major reading component. They will use assessment data and knowledge of the reading process to develop assessment plans that are differentiated instructional plans that address a student’s strengths and needs. Students must have access to a K-6 student(s) to complete assignments. This course specifically addresses Competencies 3 and 4 for Florida’s Reading Endorsement.

  
Prerequisite: C or higher in RED 3012 and Admission to the Elementary Education BS  

  
RED 4942  Practicum for Assessment and Instruction of Reading  (3 Credits )  
This course is a supervised practicum that provides teacher candidates an opportunity to apply knowledge of reading assessment and instruction in order to increase reading proficiency of all readers. This course meets Florida Reading Endorsement Competency 5. The Reading Endorsement Competencies have been infused within the objectives from this course and assignments are listed in the syllabus for the Florida Reading Endorsement. Course objectives and assignments have also been designed to prepare students for the Florida ESOL Endorsement.
